Historically, equities have been the only asset class to significantly outperform inflation. How ever their high real return (returns above inflation) expectations are accompanied by an increased exposure to risk and potential capital loss. Studies have shown that a positive realisation of an equity risk premium is only a certainty for investment periods around 20 years and that returns over shorter time periods can become highly volatile.
